I believe that the horrors of slavery are difficult to speak about with children, and this book celebrates the resilience, courage, ingenuity, hope, and talent of the enslaved rather than the brutality and cruelty of the enslavers. It should be shared with children (and adults!) of all races and backgrounds because not only does this book find a gentle approach to discuss slavery, but it explores the many ways that the descendants of those who were enslaved have contributed to the United States and the world through the arts and sciences. I absolutely love this book. I have worked with children of all backgrounds in NYC, and feel that this book is a necessary edition for every school, public and or home library. This is an amazing book that is honest and sends a positive message at the same time. I bought this for myself, but am excited to purchase more copies for my friends and family. Your Legacy's reclamation of history is beautiful, empowering and enlightening. Schele William's bold words and Tonya Engel's creative imagery have weaved a web of beauty and pride from the horrors of slavery. I am grateful for this book, these words, these images- they have allowed me to have conversations with my own kids about a very difficult part of our history but to do so in a way that allows them to witness the power and the resilience of those who were enslaved. By reading this book with our kids, we give them the knowledge of the past in a way that helps them to appreciate all that was sacrificed, the strength of survival and how this all frames our futures together. It’s a must-read for children and adults of all races. Most importantly, it teaches descendants of the enslaved lessons about their ancestors in an empowering way. The illustrations are breathtaking and jump off the page bringing the story to life. My three daughters absolutely loved it and it has become a frequently requested read-aloud in our home.
